In 1942
Born on January 10, son of the Ukrainian immigrant, coming fromBerlin, Meer [Mira] Gerchman (Kiev, 1903 – Rio
de Janeiro, 1978) and Sara Gerchman (Rio de Janeiro, 1918-2012), whose family is originally fromOdessa, Ukraine.
Mira, upon disembark in Brazil, had changed his original last name from the immigration to “Herschmann”.
In 1943
On June 19, born his only sister Betty Herschmann, who lives in Rio de Janeiro.
In 1951
Receives as a gift, from his uncle Isaac (1890 -1975) – who comes to live with his family from Paris – the first
book of art:
Desenhos e Aquarelas de Van Gogh
. His father, Mira build a little wooden playhouse and Rubens
creates scenarios and small dummies cut out to perform shadow theater, staging news extracted from
Repór-
ter Esso
program. The family moves to Friburgo, RJ.
In 1955
The family returns to Rio de Janeiro. He studied at the Colégio Andrews and meets the poet Armando Freitas
Filho. He starts to study during the night at the Escola Mallet Soares and over the morning, studies drawing
at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios. He begins to be interested in the Picasso painting and literature of Baudelaire,
Edgar Allan Poe and Rimbaud.
In 1958
He works as a designer at
Manchete
, developing projects for the magazine
Sétimo Céu
. In his spare time goes
to the street, drawing and painting the characters and landscapes of the everyday urban life. He starts to be
interested in the correspondence sent by the readers of newspapers and magazines, originating the
Correio
Sentimental
work. Purchases a lithography press, learn the technique with Antônio Grosso and began to de-
vote more to the illustration.
In 1960
He is approved to attend the Escola Nacional de Belas Artes (NSFA), where he meets the artists Anna Maria
Maiolino, Antonio Dias, Dileny Campos and Roberto Magalhães, and studied engraving with Adir Botelho.
Attend free workshops from artists like Abelardo Zaluar and Plínio Cipriano, as well as he develops the first
Moradias Coletivas
and paintings with the subject area of the crowd.
In 1962
He married Anna Maria Maiolino. Abandon the course at ENBA.
